Rewatching Goodfellas after four years completely changed my perception of the film. I liked it a bit the first time around but this time it was a freakin exceptional experience. Encompassed with raw chaotic energy, Goodfellas is certainly among Marty's best work and is nothing short of a cinematic achievement.

Funny how?

There are four aspects of the movie that elevates its greatness and made me love it all the more. Firstly, the unflinching and gore depiction of violence and crime prevailing in that era as well as the portrayal of the extravagant lifestyle of those gangsters. Henry's line "To me being a gangster was better than being president of the United States." says it all.

Secondly, the finest element of the film is its slick editing which creates an exuberant atmosphere throughout. The aura of anxiety that Thelma and Marty exhibit through the sharp editing and freeze frames always leaves the audience uncertain about the fate of the various characters.

Goodfellas is nothing without its mind-boggling soundtrack which sets the tone and the mood from the very first moment, boasting of pop-rock, American and  Italian classics which elegantly captures the essence and emotions of the scenes.

Finally, on top of all are the substantial performances which is the icing on the cake. Scorsese presents his main man DeNiro as a literal God-like figure, who shows off a unique charisma altogether. Pesci in probably his finest performance is the standout as he effortlessly balances himself playing a witty yet malicious character and Liotta also leaves a mark alongside the two giants.

It is one of the, if not the most entertaining pieces of Cinema.
