Ordet(1955) | Carl Theodor Dreyer
"It wasn't god's fault but my own. If I'd prayed with faith the miracle would have happened. But I prayed because it was worth a try. And when a father can't pray with faith for his own child - then miracles don't happen."
It's quite Astonishing that one could even conceive such an ideology let alone demonstrate it on screen with sheer artistry. Faith is a one divisive phenomena that leads to dissatisfaction or even worse...condescension. We often witness discourse of two exactly opposite ideologies in this particular medium, which likely leads to hapless consequences.
Dreyer's Ordet is simply beyond that..!! A pious man, his son with obscure Ideology, a younger one with untenable faith, a delusional son proclaiming himself being Jesus Christ, an atheist, and a Virtuous Woman who is more of a catalyst to the things happening around.
Dreyer not only Aplombly puts forth every one self's ideology but also brilliantly presents the delicate differences of two believers with distinct faiths without appearing Bias at all.
Dreyer renders a masterstroke in the climax and subsequently attempts to justify where he was heading in at first place. Inarguably, it has one of the Best Endings in the cinema !! Regardless of your belief, Ordet will propel you to start to dwell upon things with an unorthodox perspective.
Ordet is a Heavy Film To assimilate. The fact that it was made 65 years ago is inconceivable to me and it undoubtedly belongs to the ultimate "How did they do it" list (if made one). Still, a heck lot to unpack here, but it's not even supposed to be understood in A watch either.
